The Stigler Center Journalists in Residence Program is open to international students who wish to shape themselves. A stipend of $12,000 is provided to cover living expenses during the 12-week programme.

The Stigler Center Journalists in Residence Program is open to international students who aspire to mould themselves into the next generation of business reporting leaders. The Stigler Centre Journalists in Residence Programme, which debuted in March 2017, provides a transformative learning environment for aspiring journalists from around the world working in all forms of media. Its goal is to mould the future generation of business reporting officials.

The programme will last roughly 12 weeks on our Hyde Park campus, during which selected individuals will audit classes, engage in events, collaborate with peers, and socialise with the university’s best academics. Courses will be chosen by participants at the Chicago Booth. Examples of courses are The Firm and the Non-Market Environment with Professor Marianne Bertrand and Professor Luigi Zingales with Crony Capitalism.

Program participants are expected to:

  • Audit three classes
  • Attend and actively participate in classes and complete all required readings and assignments
  • Participate in Stigler lectures, lunches, and social events as well as other events recommended by the center
  • Sign a letter of agreement with the center to indicate that the program guidelines and expectations are mutually agreed upon

Scholarship Coverage

Stigler Center Journalists in Residence Program provides the recipients with below benefits:

  • Reimbursement for economy-class airfare to/from Chicago and SEVIS and visa application fees
  • A stipend* of $12,000 to cover living expenses over the 12-week program
  • Training in business fundamentals at Chicago Booth
  • Participation in seminars and workshops at Chicago Booth and across the university
  • An opportunity to write for the ProMarket publication
  • Opportunities to collaborate with Booth faculty, students, and fellow program participants
  • Designated study space
  • Certificate of participation upon successful completion of program

*The stipend is subject to tax withholding of up to 14 percent for international participants. Please check your country’s tax treaty with the United States for more information.

Eligibility Criteria for Stigler Center Journalists in Residence Program

To be eligible for Stigler Center Journalists in Residence Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Required Languages: Proficient in English
  • Eligible Countries: All World Countries.
  • Working journalists who have some years of media experience.

How to Apply for Stigler Center Journalists in Residence Program?

Please follow the following steps to avail this scholarship:

To be considered for the program, please submit the following through our online application:

  • Resume/CV
  • Three published news articles
    • Submit a copy of three published news articles, preferably in English. If the articles are not in English, a translation should be submitted along with the original articles.
    • For TV or radio journalists, please include links to your video/audio files in a PDF or Word document along with English transcriptions.
  • Personal essays (500 words max)
    • Describe your interest in the program and the goals you hope to achieve through the program.
    • Tell us more about your experience and interest in the field of economics and political economy and what you hope to learn in these areas.
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Proof of English proficiency (if applicable)
    • Non-native English speakers must submit proof of English proficiency (waived if your undergraduate or graduate degree was obtained in a college/university where English is the primary language of instruction or in an English-speaking country). Examples of proof of English proficiency include:
    • Certificates or standardized test scores (TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, ACT, Cambridge, Duolingo, etc.)
    • English equivalency diploma or certificate awarded by accredited national education institution
    • Work experience in an English-speaking office with a letter from a manager affirming language skills
